Case Study

Post-liquidity event: establishing governance after a business sale

Following a business sale, a family's wealth shifted from a single operating asset into realised capital that now had to be governed across multiple entities and generations. With it came a set of decisions their existing arrangements were not built to handle: how much liquidity and risk to carry, and how to bring together the accountants, lawyers and investment advisers who had each been working to their own brief. What they lacked was not advice but a way to decide coherently.

We established a single governance framework to sit above the detail: clear objectives, defined liquidity and risk parameters, and an agreed basis for how decisions would be made and by whom. Good governance let the family weigh each choice against their longer-term intentions rather than in isolation. We then coordinated the wider adviser group so everyone worked from shared context, with each recommendation implemented in line with the family's own decisions.

What changed:

Within around six months, fragmented advice had been replaced by a unified governance model. Decision fatigue eased, advisers worked from a common view, and the family gained confidence in preserving and growing the wealth the sale had realised.

Illustrative composite. Details have been changed to protect client confidentiality.
